An exclusive prerelease of our new film, Sofonisba’s Chess Game, is available to paid subscribers while others can watch an extended preview of the first four and a half minutes. Today we’ll release Part 2, while Parts 3 and 4 will be released on the following two Fridays.
In this part of the film we explore her large collection of self-portraits, the wide range of portraits of other people she made, how she was influenced during her time at the Spanish Court and hallmarks of her style.
You’ll learn intriguing details about how Sofonisba was given the unprecedented opportunity as a young woman to receive expert instruction and training by artists not directly related to her, with virtually every other successful female painter of the period having been daughters of accomplished artists.
We’ll also take a close-up look at The Game of Chess by Sofonisba and Campi’s portrait of her which many people had believed until recently to be a self-portrait as well.
We hope you’ll enjoy Part 2 - we look forward to your feedback!
